SPORTS FOR THOUGHT: Football should aim for 10 wins

In the dictionary, the word "rut" is defined as "a sunken track or groove made by the passage of vehicles." For a decade-long stretch, created by the vehicle of its own incompetency, the word defined the position of Ball State's football program. As a new millennium began, the program experienced its darkest period in the midst of a 21-game losing streak that spanned three seasons.

GIGOLO JOE: Roommates' cats, rules should not ruin friendships

Ball State Daily News, Ball State University, IN

6 hours ago by Joe Cermak

Dear Gigolo Joe: I'm living in an apartment with these two other girls. Don't get the wrong impression: nothing is happening between us. We have a pretty good friendship, but I hate their stupid cats. There are three of them, and they aren't those "miracle cats" that can use the toilet to go to the bathroom.

When it comes to the Internet, old people have the know-how of squid. I'm not sure if it's because they're stuck in their ways or because there aren't a lot of web sites dedicated to false teeth, but something about going online leaves them quaking in their Depends.

Surviving sans Starbucks

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

1 day ago by Sarah Zeeck

According to Slate.com, roughly 600 Starbucks nationwide will soon be closing. As Americans, the workaholics we are, we depend on coffee for not only sanity, but for survival. Many of you may be wondering how, as a nation, we will endure this magnificent loss.

So many awards, so little significance

Does anyone really care about award shows any more?

Whether it's the Golden Globes, the Oscars, the Tonys, the ESPYs, the Emmys, the Writer's Guild Awards, the Director's Guild Awards, the Screen Actor's Guild Awards, the Grammys, the MTV Movie Awards, the MTV Music Video Awards, the BET Hip Hop Awards or Bravo's A-List Awards, I have a distinct feeling that they don't really matter as much as they used to.

My experience studying abroad

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

How do I write about five weeks in Mexico, 13 Western Illinois University students and many fabulous people and experiences we will never forget? Thirteen students, including myself, flew out of O'Hare International Airport for Guadalajara on June 14 and returned on July18.

Pie-in-the-sky leases fall on students' faces

The Daily Illini, University of Illinois, IL

1 day ago by Daily Illini Editorial Board

The problem with saying "told you so" is that it assumes one party is more enlightened about a situation and its solution than the other party. We don't possess any particular insight into the campus real estate market that other students don't have.

Still, it doesn't surprise us that at least one of the brand new high-rise apartment buildings will not be fully ready for students when they come back next month.

The curious case of the lone parking meter

The Alestle, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, IL

1 day ago by Kenneth Long

Lately there has been a lot of construction and renovation going on in Cougar Village, but recently there was an addition that might be a bit unnecessary.

As I was parking near my 510 apartment, I noticed that in front of one of the parking spots closest to the sidewalk had a hole in the cement that had been filled in front of it.

Crude comments create chaos

Western Courier, Western Illinois University, IL

1 day ago by Ed Komenda

A recent television recording showing Jesse Jackson making obscene comments in regard to democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has created much controversy. Jackson's words, ironically, were not as clear-cut as he anticipated, though. The reverend, in a statement pointed at Obama, said that he wanted to "cut his nuts off.

Two days after the Colombian army rescued the 15 kidnapped by the FARC (the Revolutionary Army Forces of Colombia) leftist guerrilla, I went for a walk in downtown Medellin, the city where I was born.

A women with ragged shirt, no shoes, dirty and her hair all messed approached me.

Re: A letter in response to Barry Blitt's cartoon "The Politics of Fear" (July 21st, 2008)

The controversy over The New Yorker's cover depicting an anti-American Barack Obama in the Oval Office is unquestionably rooted in the darkest ideologies of scare tactics and fear mongering.

Insurers should cover birth control

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

When a female reporter from the Los Angeles Times asked Sen. John McCain why many health-insurance plans cover Viagra but not contraceptives, even his many years of interview experience seemed unable to lead him to an answer. The presumptive Republican nominee could not recall how he voted on the subject - a mystery soon solved by his questioner: He voted against it.

BEWILDERED SOCIETY: Be careful what you wish for

In the midst of a campus stroll late Sunday night, two friends and I perched ourselves on the ledge of Frog Baby's fountain. We lay motionless one-by-one around the fountain's bed. Muncie was treating us to a beautifully crisp, comfortable and clear night, providing a calming atmosphere for gazing endlessly into the summer night's sky.

Road trip! A solution for all our problems

Chicago Flame, University of Illinois, IL

3 days ago by Josh Moyer

One of the more frustrating things about being a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago is the lack of community at our school. We all have friends on campus and at home that we can enjoy life with, but if we are honest with ourselves we will acknowledge that it is difficult to meet people at this university because a wide majority of students treat it as if it were a giant community college.

King's latest antics reflect immaturity, not Iowans

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

3 days ago by DI Editorial Board

Iowans, it must be said, enjoy much the same nationwide reputation as their neighbors to the north: nice people. How jarring, then, to witness one of our own behaving like a witless boor while disrupting, arguably, one of the most important congressional hearings in recent history.

Apparently, Billy Ray Cyrus didn't make enough money being a second rate country musician and TV star. If a guest appearance on "Diagnosis Murder" is the pinnacle of your career, you probably aren't rolling in dough. However, Billy Ray Cyrus does have a tremendous talent.

Art Museum needs to move downtown

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

5 days ago by DI Editorial Board

With the UI Museum of Art having faced so much destruction in the flood, the best move it can make is to move.

Relocating the museum would ensure that it comes back even better than the wonderful place it has been. The new museum would be refined and revamped. It would stand as our triumph in the face of the flood. Hopefully, lengthy discussions and evaluations can be avoided - because the community, the Arts School, and the UI need the museum back.

FBI should not use racial profiling

Daily Egyptian, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL

6 days ago by Andrea Lewis

If the Bush Justice Department gets its way, the FBI may soon be going after American citizens on the basis of our race, religion and ethnicity-even when there is no evidence of wrongdoing. Federal law enforcement officials recently revealed proposed changes to the so-called attorney general guidelines that would allow authorities to initiate investigations of suspects by matching their personal traits to a terrorist profile.
