While some students may join Greek organizations to make new friends and meet new people, or as a way to become more socially active on campus, other students join as a way to give back to their communities through service projects and donations.
That is precisely what a number of Greek organizations at ISU have proved, through reports received at the Greek Affairs Office stating that Greek organization members helped raise more than $23,000, in addition to over 1,034 volunteer services hours performed to more than 26 charities throughout the fall 2006 academic semester.
The figures reported were a compilation of reports received from Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Gamma Rho, Delta Delta Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Psi, Sigma Chi, Sigma Sigma Sigma and Tau Kappa Epsilon.
"Reporting this information was not required in the past but we are requesting this information to be given in the future," Michelle Janisz, coordinator of Greek Affairs, said. "We want to communicate to the community and campus that our chapters are participating and volunteering out there."
It is required that all members of a Greek organization volunteer at least three hours of their time, per semester, to the local community, whether it be volunteering at or raising money for community events, donating money to charities, or hosting food drives.
Some nationally known organizations that have received support and continue to do so from ISU Greek organizations include St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Children's Miracle Network, the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
"In 1999, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital became Delta Delta Delta's national philanthropy. In 2005 alone, Tri Deltas nationwide made a commitment to raise $10 million over the next 10 years," Dominno Chagoya, Delta Delta Delta collegiate chapter president and a sophomore biology major, said. "Tri Delta and St. Jude collaborate together very well."
