The Green Team will be presenting the second annual Environmental Stewardship Award to any Illinois State University student, faculty, staff, department or registered student organization that proves to be most worthy of the recognition.
Applicants are asked to demonstrate admirable skills and efforts in the field of environmental stewardship pertaining to the campus and local communities.
Examples of efforts that are acceptable for recognition include research projects, ongoing environmental education programs, individual efforts and innovative program implementation.
It is required for the projects to apply to and be in support of Educating Illinois Action 10, which can be viewed at educatingillinois.ilstu.edu.
The winner of the award will be decided based upon the importance and stability of the project as well as the feasibility, the environmental impact on the University Community, creativity and the organization and tenacity of the project.
According to Nikki Brauer, director of the Wellness Program, the applications will be reviewed by "a combination of Green Team members and students."
Brauer's suggestion to individuals who are interested in applying for the award is, "We're looking for groups that have initiative and creative ideas."
Chuck Scott, executive director of facilities management and chairperson of the Green Team, said, "The award is given to an individual or group that has made significant contributions on issues regarding their environmental impact on the campus of ISU."
According to Scott, due to the assistance of Enid Cardinal, who has recently been hired as their sustainability coordinator, many more students attend Green Team meetings than in previous years.
"ISU is one of only approximately 40 universities (out of nearly 4000) nationwide that has such a person in that capacity," Scott said.
"Green Team meetings are held the first Friday of each month from 11-12 in Felmley 309. They are open meetings and anyone is welcome to attend," Scott added.
Last year, the award was given to University Housing Recycling. According to Scott, "The university now collects an excess of 1500 tons of recyclable materials each year."
Receivers of the award will be offered a certificate of recognition and a $500 award used toward the progression of environmental efforts at ISU.
Applications can be found at greenteam.ilstu.edu and can be submitted from Nov. 1 to Dec. 20.
"Since last year was the first year, we are hoping for more applications this year," Brauer said.
