Students can enjoy a free presentation of the motion picture "Rent" on Friday at 6 p.m. in Capen Auditorium.

Diversity Advocacy, University Program Board and Student Health Services are coming together to sponsor this event, which is in honor of World AIDS Day.

"Diversity Advocacy and University Program Board decided to do a collaboration to help bring awareness to this issue because this is one of those things that [is] not talked about often on-campus," Lisa Floyd, a graduate assistant for Diversity Advocacy, said.

December 1 will mark the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, a time when organizations come together to raise awareness about the worldwide epidemic.

"It is important for ISU to recognize World AIDS Day because one in five people that have HIV/AIDS [has] not been diagnosed and millions of people have died as a result," Floyd said.

According to Floyd, people 25 and under make up half of all new HIV infections.

"We hope to raise awareness and to educate students on this difficult issue through a fun medium," Floyd said.

"It is important for students to be aware of what's going on. AIDS is a growing epidemic," Katie Pratt, Redbird Awareness chairperson for the UPB, said. "We want to make sure all students are protected and don't have to face it in the years to come."

In addition to showing the movie, Diversity Advocacy and the UPB will present an informational slideshow and host a discussion about what the students learned from the movie.

"We want students to come out so they can be aware. People always hear about AIDS and HIV but they're not fully aware of how it affects them," Pratt said.

Besides attending the event Friday, Floyd encourages students to get involved in other ways.

"There is a local organization in town called McLean County AIDS Taskforce that would be an excellent way to contribute to this cause," Floyd said.

More information is available at the Health Promotion and the G-Spot, a portable gazebo found at different locations each week. The G-Spot will be in Capen starting at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Rent, based on Jonathon Larson's award-winning Broadway musical, stars most of the original Broadway cast. The event is located at Capen Auditorium on the second floor of Edwards Hall and is open to the public.
