This Thanksgiving ISU students have gone out in the spirit of giving to support the McLean County Habitat for Humanity. Each participating student was encouraged to collect $1 from 20 individuals in the hopes of earning at least $20,000.
Jennifer Detweiler, member of the Habitat for Humanity project, explained the goals of the "Power of a Dollar" fundraiser.
"This is about getting out and educating people about Habitat and our mission more than raising money," she said. "The fundraising is going pretty well so far, our goal is to raise $20,000 but we would be happy with $10,000."
She went to describe how the funds raised would be used in the community. "All of the money we raise over Thanksgiving break will go towards a house being built on Vernon St. The laying of the foundation is done. By next semester we hope to be able to move in and work on painting and other smaller things."
Many different groups have stepped forward to help with fundraising. Detweiler explained that many RSOs and fraternities and sororities are participating along with other students from across campus.
Sophomore management major Arsalan Ashraf has participated in Habitat events in the past and believes the cause is a worthy one.
"Not every one has a Saturday morning to give to help build a house which is why the Power of a Dollar campaign is good for their group. Most students don't have a bunch of money to give but most of us can spare a dollar. I hope that they raise their goal," he said.
The current project house is one of four properties purchased by Habitat for Humanity on Vernon St. and Fell St. Six residences will be erected on the sites, one being the ISU/Illinois Wesleyan project house.
"This is the fourteenth consecutive project for ISU Habitat for Humanity," Detweiler said. "We have one of the best chapters in the nation and we are always trying to get more students involved."
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit Christian group oriented at eliminating homelessness around the world. Habitat volunteers in more than 3,000 communities have constructed more than 250,000 houses providing homes to more than 1 million people. ISU student volunteers have raised more than $130,000 over the past three years and have completed 13 houses.
